Joan L. (Crump) Hanlon

HANLON, Joan L. (Crump), 94, of Rumford, died peacefully on Sunday, June 19, 2016. She was the wife of the late John D. Hanlon, sportswriter and columnist for the Providence Journal Company. Born in Elmora, NJ, she was the daughter of the late William L. Crump and Alice M. (Miller) Crump. She was a graduate of Kent Place School in Summit NJ, and held a degree from Marot Junior College in Thompson CT. 
Mrs. Hanlon was a homemaker and artist, painting many memorable portraits throughout her career. Her talents included quilting and rug hooking along with many other varied crafts and design arts, and she left behind many fine examples of her work. She was a member of Newman Congregational Church and an active member of Hamilton House where she loved to study poetry. She summered in New Hampshire and throughout her life had many opportunities for travel abroad.
She leaves her two loving children: Martha H. Brooks and her husband Richard M. of Barrington, RI, John L. Hanlon of Rumford RI, and her two grandchildren: Kate D. Neilsen of Waltham, MA and Elizabeth S. Brooks of Los Angeles CA, and a great grandson Owen O. Neilsen. She was the sister of the late Galbraith M. Crump.  
Relatives & friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, June 24, 2016 at 11:00 am at Newman Congregational Church, 100 Newman Avenue, Rumford , R.I. Burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers please send gifts in her memory to the Newman Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 4764, Rumford, RI 02916. Arrangements have been entrusted to J.H. WILLIAMS & CO. FUNERAL HOME.
