CORBITT, BIRDELLA L. (WIGHTMAN) 89, of Marian Manor, formerly of Seekonk, passed away on her birthday, June 5. She was the beloved wife of Robert M. Corbitt for 53 years. Birdie is survived by her daughter Susan McTaggart (husband Paul), her grandchildren Meghan Lilley (husband Jon), Erin McTaggart, Ryan McTaggart (partner Kerry Cook), and great-grandson Caleb McTaggart. She is also survived by her sister, Marge Erickson, sisters and brothers-in-law Ruth Staugaard (husband Burt), Dave Corbitt (wife Phyllis), Joyce Corbitt, and Dot Barker (husband Dave) as well as many nieces and nephews. Birdie was the daughter of the late Helen and Frank Wightman. She grew up in New Jersey and moved to RI to earn a BA degree at Barrington College and did graduate work in education at Boston University. Birdie spent 28 years teaching at private and public schools with most of her service in Rehoboth schools. After retirement, Birdie continued her love of painting, especially watercolor and pen and ink drawings entering shows regularly. She belonged to the Rhode Island Watercolor Society and several other art associations. Birdie was a descendant of Roger Williams and belonged to the Roger Williams Family Association. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and belonged to Barrington Baptist Church for more than fifty years. A memorial service will be held at Barrington Baptist Church, 25 Old County Road, Barrington, RI on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11:00AM.
