Charles Collins Obituary

 Warwick

 Charles H. Collins, 89, of Quaker Lane died at home.  He was the husband of Joanne K. (Ross) Collins, and the late Charlotte (Best) Collins, to whom he had been married for 59 years.  Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late William E. Collins and Jane (Bigney) Collins.  He had previously lived in Rumford, RI for many years before moving to Warwick.  
 
Mr. Collins was a 1940 graduate of Hope High School in Providence, RI and served as Class President.  He was a member of the class of 1944 at Brown University, and had served as Class President, Treasurer, Secretary and Reunion Chairperson.  He had served on the Board of Governors of the Brown Alumni Assoc., and as a member of the Association of Class Officers.

He had worked as a computer consultant for the C.J. Fox Company of Providence; Treasurer and Tax Collector for the City of East Providence, Deputy Finance Director, Treasurer and Tax Collector for the Town of Bristol, RI, Vice President and General Manager for the former Executive Jet Airlines of Newport, RI; Financial Manager of the RI Air National Guard, and Asst. US Property and Fiscal Officer for the State of RI; Comptroller/Treasurer for the former M.A. Gammino Construction Co. of Providence, and had served as the Asst. Project Manager for Gammino's construction of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier; and Director of Operations for the former Congdon and Carpenter Co. of Providence.

A WW II USAAF Veteran, he was a pilot for the Air Transport Command in Europe and Africa.  After active duty, he served with the Air Force Reserve and the RI Air National Guard until 1979., retiring with the rank of Colonel.  Among his military awards were the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and the European/African/Middle Eastern Ribbon with three battle stars.  He was a life member of the Air Force Assoc., National Guard Assoc. of the US and the RI National Guard Assoc.  He was a member of the Military Order of Foreign Wars, RI Commandery.  He wrote a column on Health Care for the RI National Guard Retirees Assoc. Newsletter.

He was a member of Newman Congregational Church, Rumford, RI and had served as Treasurer of Special Funds; a member of the Board of Deacons, Stewardship, Pastoral Search, and Investment Committees.

He had been a volunteer for the Community Fund/United Way; Narragansett Council of Boy Scouts, Troop 13, Rumford; Big Brothers; Meals on Wheels; Sturdy Memorial Hospital of Attleboro and had been an Ombudsman for the Alliance for Better Long Term Care.  He had been a Trustee and officer of the East Providence Board of Library Trustees, the First Baptist Church of East Providence and the East Providence Land Trust Conservation Trust.  He served as a director and officer of the Zeta Psi Assoc. of RI, the Providence Charitable Fuel Society and the Anawan Club of Rehoboth.  He was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and Mt. Vernon Lodge of Masons #4 F&AM.

Besides his wife, he leaves his daughters, Judith A Collins of West Warwick; Valerie G. Hazlin of Gales Ferry, CT; Bethany L. Weindel of Greenville, RI; and a son, David F. Collins of Naples, FL; six grandchildren, Dr. David F. Collins, Jr. of McLean, VA; Jodie B. Luzzi of Westerly, RI; Julie G. Lacey of Pawtucket, RI;  Sarah J. Diehl of Framingham, MA; Kimberly Hazlin of Lima, Peru; and Benjamin C. Hazlin, of Ellington, CT; and great grandchildren Jacob G. Toback of Harrisville, RI; Addison O, Campbell S.  and Beckett E. Collins of McLean, VA;  Alexander C., and Morgan F. Luzzi of  Westerly, RI; Avery K. Diehl of Framingham, MA; and Santiago H. and Matias Jaramillo of Lima, Peru; and a sister, Janet G. MacLeod of Tulsa, OK.

Burial will be private.
