Cornelia Sturgis Obituary

Cornelia B. Sturgis, 99, wife of the late George W. Sturgis, Jr., and sister of the late Elizabeth Ramsden, died Thursday, Jan. 27that her home.  Born in East Providence, she was daughter of the late Cornelius L. Bourne and Ida A. (Williams) Bourne.  

Mrs. Sturgis loved brightening the lives of children and spent much of her life in roles dedicated to empowering and advancing the young.  She held positions such as the Girl Scout Commissioner in East Providence, Director of Youth work at Park Place Congregational Church and various leadership roles at Irons Homestead Camp in Scituate, RI., among others.

Mrs. Sturgis had a long and happy career at AMICA Insurance Co., where she was a clerk for 42 years. She was also an active member of Beta Sigma Phi and Hamilton House.  Along with other activities she deeply enjoyed spending summers with family and friends in Bristol, RI.

Cornelia was a member of Central Congregational Church and spent many years at United Congregational Church of East Providence earlier in her life. These communities held a special place in her heart.

Mrs. Sturgis is survived by three cousins, Virginia, Carolyn, and Marilyn.   She is also survived by six young people who were like family to her, Douglas, Annaliesa, Nicolaus, Theodore, William, and Finn as well as many friends near and far.   

Her Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving will be held Thursday, Feb. 3rdat 12:00 P.M. in Central Congregational Church, 296 Angell Street, Providence.  Burial will follow in Springvale Cemetery.
