Esther M. (Chandler) Winslow

Esther Winslow, 87, of Seekonk, formerly of Preble, NY for 35 years, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2015 at Hattie Ide Chaffee nursing home in East Providence, RI. Esther was born December 29, 1927 in Walpole, NH, the daughter of Glenna Crain Chandler and Hollis L. Chandler. She leaves behind her husband of 65 years, Bill Winslow, daughter and son-in-law, Jane and John Haynes of Rehoboth, MA, grandchildren Katherine Haynes and Mark Haynes. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Ramsey, brother-in-law John Ramsey and sister-in-law Grace Chandler, (widow of her brother Gilbert Chandler), all of Walpole, NH, as well as five nieces and four nephews. Esther graduated from business school in Northampton MA and then worked as a secretary at Mount Herman School in Mount Hermon, MA, where she met her husband. Over the years she had secretarial positions at Industrial Tape in New Brunswick, NJ, for a lawyer in Oneonta NY, for 11 years at Homer Central School in NY and at Roberta Segal & Associates in Providence, RI. Early in their marriage she and her husband owned a small dairy farm in Otego, NY for 6 years. In Preble, NY she was a Girl Scout leader for 15 years, eventually leading two troops at the same time. Highlights were trips to New York City and Washington, DC. Clowning was one of Esther’s favorite things to do. Esther and a friend performed at numerous events including various Church services, parades and charitable events. They also taught a clowning short course at Cortland State University of NY. Esther was a committed volunteer at the Red Cross office in Cortland, NY, contributing secretarial and organizational skills for many years. She and her husband were also active in the Preble Congregational Church UCC for 35 years. She served on many chicken dinner committees and had a long tenure as co-chair of the church bazaar committee. A memorial service will be held at Rehoboth Congregational Church, 139 Bay State Road, Rehoboth, MA at 12 noon on Saturday, January 10, 2015.
