Evelyn R. (Harry) Campbell, 91, of Riverside, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 18, 2019. She was the wife of the late Leo J. Campbell. Born in East Providence, she was a daughter of the late Louis E. Harry & Louisa (Reckling) Harry.
A graduate of East Providence High School, Mrs. Campbell received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1949 and pursued her passion for teaching; completing her practicum as a student teacher at the Gordon School prior to its move from the East Side of Providence to East Providence. Subsequently, Mrs. Campbell began teaching in East Providence Public Schools for many years until her retirement in 1989. In 2011, Mrs. Campbell was recognized as being the first African American school teacher in the City of East Providence.
A lifelong parishioner of Grace Episcopal Church in Providence and former member of the Altar Guild and Vestry, Mrs. Campbell enjoyed spending time with her family and close friends.
She leaves her loving daughters: Ramona M. Souza of Riverside, Linda L. Shumate & her husband Robert of East Providence, Lisa L. Almada of East Providence, & Debora A. Gomes & her husband Miguel of Riverside. She was the mother-in-law of the late August M. Souza. Cherished grandmother of Garnell Shumate, Kellena Shumate, Christopher Shumate, Esq., Damian Almada, Andrew Shumate, Derrin Almada, Esq., Ryan Wigfall, Jonathan Shumate, Matthew Shumate, Nathan Gomes, Desmond Almada, Pedro Gomes, Michael Gomes & many great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nieces & nephews and her Yorkshire Terrier, Noel. She was the sister of the late Natalie Young, Louis E. Harry, Wilhelmina Morris, & Dwight W. Harry.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from the J.H. WILLIAMS & CO. FUNERAL HOME, 210 Taunton Avenue, Route 44, in East Providence., from 5-8PM with a Celebration of Life and Eucharist at Grace Episcopal Church, 300 Westminster Street, Providence, RI on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 11AM. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Pawtucket.
