Katharine J. Anderson

Katharine J. Anderson, 70, of Rumford, died peacefully on January 12, 2022 at the HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center. Born in Portland, Maine, she was the daughter of Louis C. Anderson, Jr. and Barbara C. (Barron) Anderson.

She was graduated from South Portland (Maine) High School in 1969 and from the University of Maine (Orono) in 1973. After university she worked for Maine National Bank for a year before moving to Rumford. Soon after moving, she started working for Providence Gas Company where she worked for 37 years, retiring in 2011. During her tenure there, PGC became KeySpan Gas East Corporation, which later became a division of National Grid.

She was an avid reader and loved to knit. She knitted lovely soft scarves which she donated to charity, usually to First Congregational Church in South Portland. She leaves behind dozens of skeins of yarn which will go to the Dempsey Center, Patrick Dempsey's charity which provides support for cancer patients. There, volunteers will take the yarn and turn it into hats, scarves, mittens, and other items to help cancer patients. In the last few years she provided home care for her mother, who lived with her, and who predeceased her by only 15 days.

She was predeceased by her parents. She leaves a brother, Mark L. Anderson of Hollis Center, Maine.  She was step-sister to Barbara (J. Charles) Clancy of Riverside and Robert (Lisa) Patterson of Warren.  She also leaves and a niece, Lynette K. Melton of Springfield, Ohio, as well as seven cousins in Maine.  She leaves behind her two golden retrievers, Lucy and Jake.  

Graveside service and burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Portland will be private.
